Minister of Social Affairs Evaluates Sihanoukville Department

PREAH SIHANOUK: Minister of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation Chea Somethy led his ministry’s officials to visit and inspect the progress of its Preah Sihanouk department on September 25.

Director of the Sihanoukville Department of Social Affairs, Veterans and Rehabilitation, Sam Sophea, said that the good cooperation between the local administration and its national counterpart enabled social services and various social assistance programs that reached 11,467 individuals. He said that his department is working to establish a homeless shelter and working with partners to provide assistance to the unhoused. The department is also working to strengthen the capacity of social services and case management and to increase intervention and awareness aimed at preventing domestic violence through strong campaigns.

After listening to the director’s report, Minister Chea Somethy thanked the leaders, civil servants and relevant units who actively performed their duties with a sense of responsibility, highly contributing to the successful development of the department.

He also spoke on the Royal Government’s six priority policy programs to be implemented before the end of 2023. The policies include access to healthcare and health coverage for all, providing vocational training to poor and vulnerable youth, building a social security net for those facing crises and farmer protection through agricultural lending.

He highlighted the two most relevant to social work are vocational training and helping the poor and vulnerable through economic crises and emergencies.

The minister encouraged those working for Sihanoukville’s Department of Social Affairs to continue their hard work, strengthen the training of officials and mobilize technical and financial resources to achieve the ministry’s goals.

Chea Somethy said he will continue to monitor the progress of the provincial Departments of Social Affairs, noting that some needed more development than others and that each had their own set of challenges to face and examine.
